Madd Munfasil occurs when a Madd letter (ا ـ ي ـ و) appears at the end of a word and is followed by a Hamza (ء) at the beginning of the next word. Below are simple, clear examples from the Qur’an—one for each Madd letter.
“Inna anzalnahu” (إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ) – The elongation letter (Alif) at the end of “Inna” is followed by a hamzah at the beginning of “anzalnahu.”
﴾ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ ﴿
“Bimā unzila” – “…in what has been sent down” (Al-Baqarah 4)
The word بِمَا ends with Alif (ا), and the next word أُنْزِلَ begins with a Hamza (أ), creating Madd Munfasil.
﴾ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ﴿
“Yā ayyuhan-nās” – “O mankind…” (Al-Baqarah 21)
Here, يَا ends with Alif (ا) and the next word أَيُّهَا begins with a Hamza (أ).
﴾ وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ ﴿
“Wafī anfusikum” – “…and in yourselves” (Adh-Dhāriyāt 21)
The word فِي ends with Yā’ (ي), followed by the Hamza (أ) in أَنْفُسِكُمْ.
﴾ إِنِّي أَنَا اللَّهُ ﴿
“Inni anallāh” – “Indeed, I am Allah…” (Tāhā 14)
The Madd letter appears at the end of إِنِّي, and the next word أَنَا begins with a Hamza.
﴾ قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ ﴿
“Qū anfusakum” – “…protect yourselves” (At-Taḥrīm 6)
The word قُوا ends with Waw (و), and أَنْفُسَكُمْ starts with a Hamza—forming Madd Munfasil.
﴾ تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ ﴿
“Tūbū ilallāh” – “…repent to Allah” (An-Nūr 31)
The word تُوبُوا ends with Waw (و), and the following word إِلَى begins with a Hamza (إِ).
