Divisions of Tajweed

Tajweed consists of two main branches:

Theoretical Tajweed       Learning rules, definitions, and terminology

Practical Tajweed          Applying correct vocal performance based on rules

Theoretical Tajweed Includes

• Articulation points (Makharij)

• Characteristics of letters (Sifāt)

• Rules of Noon and Meem

• Types of Madd (elongation)

• Rules of stopping and beginning

• Tafkhīm and Tarqīq

• Other phonetic rules

Practical Tajweed Includes

• Oral transmission from teacher to student

• Listening and repetition

• Guided correction

• Continuous practice

Important Note

Mastery of Tajweed cannot be achieved by reading rules alone
but requires oral recitation under a qualified teacher,
just as the Qur’an has been transmitted since its revelation.
